Artist & Teacher

kristy kensinger

I believe that creativity stems from our innate curiosity. The more we pursue what captivates our interest, the closer we align with our true selves. As humans, I believe it is essential for us to engage with our hands. We need to create whether it's cooking in the kitchen, building something, or expressing ourselves through art.

For me, art has always come naturally—not because I was skilled at first that took many years (and continues) of practicing, but because it provided a gentle landing. Creating has often brought me comfort and an outlet, instilling a sense of calm and belonging. Although I drifted away from creating for a time, I eventually found my way back through various crafts.

I love curating collections and classes just as much as I enjoy painting itself. The initial spark of an idea, the brainstorming phase, and the selection of color palettes and mood all fuel my work. I thrive on merging design with my creative process.

My hope is to share the insights I have gained and musings I encounter with others. There is so much beauty in this world, if only we take the time to pause and truly appreciate.

Because creating is essential.

creative routine

I wish I could provide a straightforward answer, but my creative routine is always evolving. I've discovered that when my routine becomes too stagnant, it detracts from my creativity. Conversely, without any routine, I struggle to carve out time for my art.

I find my creative flow aligns best with the seasons. Instead of forcing progress year-round, I now focus on recognizing which times are best for gathering inspiration and which are ideal for immersing myself in the studio.

I believe that being an artist doesn't mean we must always be actively creating. During moments of feeling uninspired, I have learned that the best remedy is often to step out of the studio. Here are some activities I love immersing in to reignite my creativity. Get out in nature, take a trip, capture photographs for reference photos, collect nature’s clippings, visit a museum, enroll in a new class or workshop, visit a local market, read a new book, cook a meal, surround yourself with friends and loved ones and listen to their stories.

Creativity often sparks most when we step away from the studio and start living a creative life.

creative space

Making a space your own

I have worked in various environments, from the kitchen table alongside my two kids to a more polished in-home studio. What I have discovered is that creation is simply about creating. Easy right?! While I do enjoy designing and curating my space, incorporating unique details and items collected from life's experiences and travels, the reality is that we can create with just a journal and a pencil. Our spaces can serve as extensions of our creativity, which is truly beautiful. However, I hope that the process of setting up a studio doesn’t distract you from the act of creating itself. Love your space and make it your own but most importantly start.
